Grand Central Market has been feeding LA for almost 100 years. When it opened in 1917, Broadway was the principal commercial and entertainment corridor of downtown Los Angeles. The Market has always reflected the changing population of downtown. Today, as the downtown historic core continues to evolve (particularly Broadway), Grand Central Market is once again adapting. Join de LaB for a tour of this historical and epicurean landmark with Kevin West, former W editor, and author of Saving the Season, the blog and cookbook. We'll see (and taste) firsthand what is helping to transform Grand Central Market from yesteryear's farmer's market into LA's own version of Pike Place.

We'll start by exploring the 45,000 square foot arcade and meeting some of the shops that are helping to make the market a national-caliber eating experience, including the signature stops like Sarita’s Pupuseria, Las Morelianas, and Tacos Tumbras a Tomas; as well as the newbs like Sticky Rice, Eggslut, Valerie, G&B Coffee, and more. We'll end the tour at Horse Thief Barbecue just in time for lunch.

Following the tour, stay for dublab's Eat to the Beat Fall 2013 Proton Drive Closing Celebration. The beloved LA music and culture collaborative will be dropping beats all day long and curating a slate of fun activities to celebrate the close of their biannual fundraising drive. Eat to the Beat is free and open to the public.

Kick off Thanksgiving a bit early: eat up with de LaB, then stay and dance it off with dublab!
For the next event in our Making LA series, we're visiting South Los Angeles, where a historic YMCA has been brought back to life by Koning Eizenberg. The 28th Street Apartments is a supportive housing and community space for individuals transitioning from foster care. In addition to a careful restoration of the historic features, a new residential wing provides affordable apartments for residents with sustainable features like cooling cross-ventilation and solar energy from photovoltaics. In addition, the existing rooftop was repurposed as a garden and social space to link the historic building to new construction.
Built in 1926, the 28th Street YMCA provided a recreational respite, a place for socializing, and affordable housing for the predominantly African American community. Designed by renowned African American architect Paul Williams, the YMCA glittered as a jewel of the neighborhood until it fell into disrepair in the latter part of the 20th century. After it was acquired by Clifford Beers Housing in 2009, the organization worked closely with the architects to restore the building to its former sense of pride while looking forward to the new role it could serve in the community.

This collaboration between Clifford Beers Housing and the Coalition for Responsible Community Development exemplifies the potential for public-private partnership and has won numerous awards to date. As an icon of Hollywood, the Magic Castle needs no introduction. Since 1963 the Victorian mansion has served as a private club and academy for magicians counting over 5,000 members worldwide. The historic-cultural monument was designed in 1909 by Lyman Farwell and Oliver Dennis and remains one of the most beloved—and mysterious—buildings in the city. On this private tour, we'll learn about the historic structure as well as the renovations that occurred after a devastating fire on Halloween Night 2011. Who knows, we may even meet Irma, the castle's resident ghost.
For our inaugural NEA Art Works-funded Making LA event we're visiting a piece of LA history at Echo Park Lake. Originally built in 1860 as a reservoir for drinking water, the lake and surrounding park recently underwent a two-year, $45 million rehabilitation. The trash, urban detritus and bacteria that killed the fish and flowers are gone. In its place are nearly 400 new lotus plants, spruced up walking paths, newly planted native greenery, and a restored fountain, boathouse and The Lady of the Lake. Plus, the pedal boats are back, as well as the recently opened Square One cafe!

What if LA had five times as much green space? A subway system that spanned more than 100 miles? An airport that looked like this one?

If you've ever wondered these questions and more, then the A+D Museum's highly anticipated summer exhibition, Never Built Los Angeles exhibition, is one you don't want to miss. Curated by Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin, with exhibit design by Clive Wilkinson Architects, Never Built: Los Angeles is the first extensive exhibition to showcase the unbuilt forms that could have radically reshaped the Southern California we know, love, and, let's be honest, sometimes hate. Unlike any other exhibition before it, Never Built Los Angeles asks why does LA attract some of the world's most creative architects only to see so many grand architectural schemes flounder?

On August 22nd, we're hosting an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the exhibition with the curators. Sam and Greg will share the real stories behind the failed 100 projects by more than 25 architects and practices that will be on display. Afterwards, we'll head to Stark Bar, where we can either drown our sorrows over good ideas lost, or rejoice at bad ideas curtailed forever.
When you think "frat house" you're probably more likely to think of beer and bongs than great design. Yet Mass Architecture and Design has managed to transform USC's Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house into a modern masterpiece. Think less "Animal House" (goodbye stripper poles!) and more Alvar Aalto.
This Dwell-worthy housing, featured in the LA Times, reflects a new sensibility for the next generation of design aficionados. After undergoing a $903,000 renovation last year, the house features contemporary design flourishes like cedar ceiling paneling, redwood slats and a cool gray color palette interjected with shots of color. Yet the house stays true to its mid-century bones, maximizing light and open space. It's a house that visibly stands out on "The Row." More photos here.

Join us as we take a tour of the house with Frank Acevedo, alum and president of the Central Area Planning Commission and MASS Architecture and Design principal, architect Ana Henton.

Afterwards we'll head over to modern gastropub The Lab for craft beers and bites in a former Sizzler.

The event is free, cash bar at The Lab, but space is limited so be sure to reserve your space early.
With a new cocktail program by master mixologists Liquid Assets’ Marcos Tello & Aidan Demarest, Invention is set to become one of downtown's hottest spots for a tipple.

While the LA Athletic Club is still members-only, the Club now offers a social membership for those who want to make Invention (and the adjacent restaurant Famous Players) their preferred drinking destination.

Tracy Beckmann honed her skills as a designer during her four-year collaboration with Kelly Wearstler of KWID and the renowned KOR Group. In addition to an impressive collection of LA-based design projects, Beckmann has also recently garnered global media attention for the impressive restoration of the famed Hotel Lautner that she and business partner Ryan Trowbridge own in Desert Hot Springs (that we toured earlier this year at Modernism Week).
Medina has handpicked a variety of presenters from across the design disciplines in honor of the LADF's spirit of creative inclusion. We didn't think it hurt to add a bit of sport either, so once the design chatter ends, presenters are invited to put down the mic, pick up the paddles, and join the rest of us in an epic battle for ping pong supremacy.

Originally devised in Tokyo in 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture, Pecha Kucha is a japanese term that loosely means "chit-chat." It's a simple presentation format wherein 20 brave presenters from various design disciplines, ranging from architecture, design, fashion, and art are invited to show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. Pecha Kucha was brought to LA by the LA Forum in 2003 which has produced over 30 successful sessions over the years.
SOLD OUT: We're very sorry but space is extremely limited for this tour and the event sold out in about 20 minutes. We do have a short waitlist that we will use if people cancel their orders. We'll try our best to plan another tour, but the AIA is hosting a breakfast and tour at Dodger Stadium on May 16 that you might be interested in attending.

You may have read about it. You may have seen it on TV. You may even have gone to a game at the newly renovated Dodger Stadium. But how much do you know about the $100 million off-season renovation that was just completed? With widened concourses, expanded restrooms, new kids' play areas and modernized clubhouses, it's a whole new game. According to Curbed LA:
Throughout the winter, crews totaling 700 workers were working 24 hours a day to complete the construction. The team exceeded the industry standard of $1 million a day on construction on more than one occasion.

Join us for a very special behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium with Dodgers SVP of Planning and Development Janet-Marie Smith, who brought her expertise working with the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles to LA. Also joining us is architect Brenda Levin, who led the integration of the new construction with historic elements of the ballpark.
Space is EXTREMELY limited for this tour and will book quickly.

Join de LaB on May 18th for a special "Raise the Roof" party on (yes, on) the newly finished roof of the Neutra VDL Residence, which is owned and managed by Cal Poly Pomona. The much-anticipated restoration work, guided by local firm Marmol Radziner and Neutra VDL Residence Director and Cal Poly Pomona Architecture Chair Sarah Lorenzen, is finally complete and we think it deserves a proper toast!

As some of you may remember, we hosted a fundraiser at the historic home back in September 2011, where we helped raised more than $800 to aid the roof restoration work. Other contributors to this effort were Friends of Heritage Preservation, Marmol Radziner, and Friends of VDL.

In the spirit of the home's ongoing restoration, this event will also support the next phase of restoration work. To date, restoration of VDL, which began in 2008, includes restoration of the interior of the Garden House, full electrical rewiring, restoration of the roofs, new paint, new fences and site walls, and garden replanting. The next phase for Cal Poly Pomona will include restoration of the interior finishes.

Though the VDL Studio and Residence is open to the public every Saturday from 11am to 3pm, our "Raise the Roof" party will offer a rare glimpse of the house at dusk with all of the reflecting pools filled. We'll also receive an overview on the history of the house, details on the roof restoration project, and the artist-in-residence program from Neutra VDL Residence Director Sarah Lorenzen.

We look forward to seeing you on the roof with a glass of (white) wine in hand!

We are beyond excited to announce that de LaB is the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts! The funds will support our Making LA initiative, a new event series we'll be producing over the next year that will include... drum roll... the first-ever de LaB conference!

As part of this round of funding, the Art Works program awarded 817 grants totaling $26.3 million to projects across the country, according to their press release:

In August 2012, the NEA received 1,547 eligible applications for Art Works grants requesting more than $80 million in funding. Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts. The 817 recommended NEA grants total $26.3 million and span 13 artistic disciplines and fields. Applications were reviewed by panels of outside experts convened by NEA staff and each project was judged on its artistic excellence and artistic merit.

We're so honored to be in such great company! You can read more about the Art Works program and see the list of grantees [PDF].

Now, we need your ideas for how to make Making LA!

This special event series will feature ten important and inspiring community-focused projects located across the east side of Los Angeles, where you'll have the opportunity to learn from the designers, architects, and artists who completed and/or fostered these projects. The series will culminate in 2014 with the Making LA conference, a one-day conference hosted on the east side of L.A., that features local creatives covering the elusive act of implementation for socially focused design ideas. The Making LA conference will also significantly highlight each of the creatives featured within the year-long Making LA event series, in addition to effectively educating hundreds of local creatives on how to move forward on their own projects for Los Angeles.

So let's hear it! What designers and projects should we feature? How can we produce the most dynamic, inspirational (and fun) events and conference you've ever attended?

Let us know in the comments or send us an email at hello@designeastoflabrea.org

And we know we've been saying this a lot lately, but we really are so honored and humbled by your ongoing support as we grow* together. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

*And while we're talking growth, we should mention that the newest member of the de LaB family was born today, a baby boy to our co-founder Haily Zaki and her husband Brian Tuey. Welcome Rowan Phoenix Tuey!alissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06055439161169644324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6066630180380981853.post-51596008384391182072013-04-02T11:48:00.003-07:002013-04-04T13:18:20.486-07:00Vote for de LaB's "Making LA" at LA2050!

Fellow de LaBbers—we need your help!

We've submitted a proposal to the Goldhirsh Foundation's ambitious My LA2050 initiative, a program that plans to give away 10 $100,000 grants to local organizations and projects that will shape the future of LA. The initiative looks at the health of this city across eight key indicators: arts & cultural vitality, education, environmental quality, health, housing, income & employment, public safety and social connectedness. Our project Making LA, can be found under the arts & cultural vitality indicator.

A grant from the Goldhirsh Foundation would allow us to continue to offer amazing design programming through the next year. Making LA, a special event series, would feature ten important and inspiring projects located across the east side of Los Angeles (maybe you!). Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from the designers, architects, and artists who completed and/or fostered these projects. The series will culminate with the Making LA Conference, a one-day conference hosted on the east side of LA that features local creatives instructing attendees on the elusive act of implementation for socially focused design ideas.

Angelenos are a creative bunch—we want to enable and empower all creatives and help them implement their vision for the city of the future!

But we need YOUR help to make this a reality. We need to be listed in the top 10 here to even be considered for a grant, so please vote for us! Voting opens April 2nd at noon and runs until April 17th at noon. Tell your friends, your family, help us spread the word!

We've always been humbled by the generosity and enthusiasm of our fellow de LaBbers—we can't thank you enough for the support you've shown us as we grew from a small group of design nerds to an official non-profit with more than 3,000 dedicated de LaBbers.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Our two-hour guided tour will focus on contemporary design and architecture, stopping by the area's newest buildings, studios and stores, and meeting many of the creatives who are transforming the city into one of the most exciting pockets of L.A. We'll check out the new digs of Morphosis and Clive Wilkinson Architects, hear from Eric Owen Moss about the legacy and future of the Conjunctive Points and Hayden Tract developments, and peek inside the beautiful Arcana Books space, designed by Johnston Marklee. You've likely spotted it as you've sailed by it on a nearby freeway, or perhaps you caught a glimpse in the distance during a hike on an adjacent hill: Occidental College's Solar Array is one of the largest ground-mounted arrays in L.A. The 4886 panels will provide an estimated 11% of the power on campus and could save the school as much as $250,000 a year. We'll be getting a tour of the array with Kara Bartelt of Lettuce Office, who will demonstrate how her firm worked with the school to create the curving design of the panels based on a mathematical formula, resulting in a sustainable, aesthetically pleasing installation that's more akin to public art.

Join de LaB for a morning of contemporary art, architecture and... cannibalism? We're headed to Monterey Park for a private tour of the MexiCali Biennial, an ambitious exhibition featuring 33 artists from Mexico and California. The theme of this biennial is—yes—cannibalism, resulting in provocative pieces exploring issues of consumption and culture from emerging voices on both sides of the border. And the show itself is housed in the Vincent Price Art Museum (yes, that Vincent Price), a stunning new building designed by Arquitectonica.

We'll take a private tour of the MexiCali Biennial with co-curator Ed Gomez, see the building that's become a landmark for this community, and hear from the museum staff about why the legendary actor decided to bring his vast collection of art to East Los Angeles College. Read about the show at the LA Weekly and see more photos at C-Monster.

Over the past few weeks, we've seen four exciting new additions to LA's public space: The city's first parklets—yes, tiny, community-designed parks—have been popping up on city streets. We'll be visiting two of the parklets on Spring Street in downtown, hearing from the planners, designers, local business owners and neighbors who made these parklets possible. Learn how this team worked together, see how the city is now officially supporting these efforts, and find out how you can bring a parklet to your block! For more information about these particular parklets, check out the Spring Street Parklets page at the DLANC website.

Martinis anyone? It's time once again for our annual field trip far east of La Brea to sunny Palm Springs for Modernism Week 2013, the annual 11-day celebration of midcentury architecture, design and culture. As always, the jam-packed schedule features an incredible array of programs including iconic home tours, architectural bus tours, cocktail parties, gallery openings, special exhibitions, fashion shows, design showcases and expos, and lectures and film screenings, not to mention live music.

Join de LaB as we go on design walkabout in Palm Springs. The weekend begins with a book signing and celebration with Stamberg Aferiat and Modernism Week's team of investigative Instagrammers, the PS ModSquad, at the colorful Saguaro Hotel. Next up, a fundraiser for Never Built at a Joshua Tree prefab and a tour of the Hotel Lautner. And we end the weekend with happy hour and some nosh at WORKSHOP Kitchen + Bar, one of the newest eateries in Palm Springs, designed by SOMA Architects.

Pick and choose which events you'd like to join us for during the course of the weekend. And of course we have a block of rooms reserved just for de LaB at the Saguaro Hotel... read on for more details about what to do and where to stay!

The Expo Line opened last year, dramatically expanding LA's rail network, reaching into neighborhoods underserved by transit, and forming the first phase of what will eventually be a light-rail-to-the-sea (finally!). But the Expo Line's distinctive shimmering canopies also represent a turning point for the city's transit system—the Expo Line was the first Metro line to introduce a universal station design which highlights its impressive public art program.

On Sunday, January 27, we're climbing aboard the Expo Line with Roland Genick from Parsons, who will talk about the station design, Heidi Zeller, Metro's Senior Creative Services Officer, who will give an overview of the line's art program, plus two station artists, Jessica McCoy (Expo/Vermont Station) and Ronald Llanos (Expo/Western Station), who will share their experiences in creating neighborhood-appropriate art for the stations.

1:00 p.m. Tour departs promptly at 1:00 p.m.
