What if LA had five times as much green space? A subway system that spanned more than 100 miles? An airport that looked like this one?

If you've ever wondered these questions and more, then the A+D Museum's highly anticipated summer exhibition, Never Built Los Angeles exhibition, is one you don't want to miss. Curated by Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin, with exhibit design by Clive Wilkinson Architects, Never Built: Los Angeles is the first extensive exhibition to showcase the unbuilt forms that could have radically reshaped the Southern California we know, love, and, let's be honest, sometimes hate. Unlike any other exhibition before it, Never Built Los Angeles asks why does LA attract some of the world's most creative architects only to see so many grand architectural schemes flounder?

On August 22nd, we're hosting an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the exhibition with the curators. Sam and Greg will share the real stories behind the failed 100 projects by more than 25 architects and practices that will be on display. Afterwards, we'll head to Stark Bar, where we can either drown our sorrows over good ideas lost, or rejoice at bad ideas curtailed forever.

July 27 > Going Greek Fraternity House Tour > Exposition Park

When you think "frat house" you're probably more likely to think of beer and bongs than great design. Yet Mass Architecture and Design has managed to transform USC's Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house into a modern masterpiece. Think less "Animal House" (goodbye stripper poles!) and more Alvar Aalto.

This Dwell-worthy housing, featured in the LA Times, reflects a new sensibility for the next generation of design aficionados. After undergoing a $903,000 renovation last year, the house features contemporary design flourishes like cedar ceiling paneling, redwood slats and a cool gray color palette interjected with shots of color. Yet the house stays true to its mid-century bones, maximizing light and open space. It's a house that visibly stands out on "The Row." More photos here.

Join us as we take a tour of the house with Frank Acevedo, alum and president of the Central Area Planning Commission and MASS Architecture and Design principal, architect Ana Henton.

Afterwards we'll head over to modern gastropub The Lab for craft beers and bites in a former Sizzler.

July 16 > Invention Bar at the Los Angeles Athletic Club > DTLA

Down on 7th and Olive in the Historic Core, the Los Angeles Athletic Club has been entertaining its exclusive membership since 1880. With a brand new makeover by interior designer Tracy Beckmann (Mas Malo, Hotel Lautner), the third-floor restaurant and bar maintain the space's Art Deco charm with mid-century flourishes. With a new cocktail program by master mixologists Liquid Assets’ Marcos Tello & Aidan Demarest, Invention is set to become one of downtown's hottest spots for a tipple. 

While the LA Athletic Club is still members-only, the Club now offers a social membership for those who want to make Invention (and the adjacent restaurant Famous Players) their preferred drinking destination.

Tracy Beckmann honed her skills as a designer during her four-year collaboration with Kelly Wearstler of KWID and the renowned KOR Group.  In addition to an impressive collection of LA-based design projects, Beckmann has also recently garnered global media attention for the impressive restoration of the famed Hotel Lautner that she and business partner Ryan Trowbridge own in Desert Hot Springs (that we toured earlier this year at Modernism Week).

June 26 > Pecha Kucha x Ping Pong > DTLA

As part of the third annual Los Angeles Design Festival, de LaB is collaborating with Santino Medina of Gehry Technologies to co-host the first-ever Pecha Kucha x Ping Pong Night at The Standard's new ping pong social club, a fun "spin" on the fast-paced open mic night that we've all come to know and love. Medina has handpicked a variety of presenters from across the design disciplines in honor of the LADF's spirit of creative inclusion.  We didn't think it hurt to add a bit of sport either, so once the design chatter ends, presenters are invited to put down the mic, pick up the paddles, and join the rest of us in an epic battle for ping pong supremacy.  

Originally devised in Tokyo in 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture, Pecha Kucha is a japanese term that loosely means "chit-chat."  It's a simple presentation format wherein 20 brave presenters from various design disciplines, ranging from architecture, design, fashion, and art are invited to show 20 images, each for 20 seconds.  Pecha Kucha was brought to LA by the LA Forum in 2003 which has produced over 30 successful sessions over the years.

June 2 > Design-n-Dim Sum Bike Tour > Chinatown

It's back! Get ready for our (fifth?) annual Design-n-Dim Sum bike ride with Flying Pigeon on Sunday, June 2nd for another day of studio visits, biking and bao. This year we have a stellar lineup of studio visits, including furniture maker Stefan Bishop, the live-work studio of architect Astrid Diehl and artist Eddy Sykes, and master ceramicist Tracy Wilkinson. We'll be meeting at bike shop Flying Pigeon in Highland Park at 11am and will be on the road by 11:30am for a quick trip up to Glassell Park, then roll over the river to Frogtown before heading south to Chinatown. Total distance for the day will be about 9 miles (you can ride one mile or take the Gold Line from Chinatown if you need to ride back to Flying Pigeon to return your bike or get to your car).

If you have a bike, please bring it. We have about 15 bikes available for rental from Flying Pigeon, for $15 for the day. Bikes are on a first come, first serve basis via RSVP.You can let us know if you need a bike when you RSVP (it's a little checkbox at the end of the form).

Please bring water and sunscreen. It can get hot out there!

Please bring CASH only for the dim sum. We estimate the cost will be about $20 per person.

May 20 > A New Blue: Behind the Scenes at Dodger Stadium > Elysian Park

We'll try our best to plan another tour, but the AIA is hosting a breakfast and tour at Dodger Stadium on May 16 that you might be interested in attending.

You may have read about it. You may have seen it on TV. You may even have gone to a game at the newly renovated Dodger Stadium. But how much do you know about the $100 million off-season renovation that was just completed? With widened concourses, expanded restrooms, new kids' play areas and modernized clubhouses, it's a whole new game. According to Curbed LA:

All told, the team spent $100 million constructing seven new buildings and three entrance plazas around the stadium, reconfiguring the loge and bleacher areas, pulling out rows of seats to widen the walkway in front of concessionaires, and building an entirely new clubhouse for the players. Throughout the winter, crews totaling 700 workers were working 24 hours a day to complete the construction. The team exceeded the industry standard of $1 million a day on construction on more than one occasion.

Join us for a very special behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium with Dodgers SVP of Planning and Development Janet-Marie Smith, who brought her expertise working with the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles to LA. Also joining us is architect Brenda Levin, who led the integration of the new construction with historic elements of the ballpark.
